Cody the Boy Scout

Well, yesterday was a big day in our house. Cody Bridged over to the Boy Scouts. We have been looking forward to this day. Look how tall he is getting I just can't believe my baby is such a big boy. He worked really hard these last couple of months to get all complete with his Arrow of Light.

He will be in his big brothers Patrol (wolverines) I know some say it would be better for them to be separated, but they are really great together and Justin is a great big brother and will make sure Cody stays in line.

We are finally to have all scout activities together and this will make life so much easier. Cody has already gone on two Scout trips. We will go to Joshua Tree in a couple weeks for a family camp and some rock climbing. This will be such a great time of growing for Cody.

New Year's weekend

We went on a Christmas tree light search one night. It was beautiful some houses were just crazy decorated.

We made these yummy brownie Santa hats. We made some to share and some to eat.

As Dinner progressed we looked over and Andrija was passed out on the floor sound asleep. She had been sick the days before so she was extra tired.

This the view we have of Lacee a lot because the do not have a dishwasher and she spends much time at the sink.

The next day it was to the park for some horse shoes. This must have been a close one cause the are down there measuring to make sure.

Lacee got a ringer. It was pretty exciting.

Grand Canyon

We made to the Grand Canyon in Mid October and the weather could not have been better.

It was AWESOME. I always say I love mountains and trees and green. The dessert just does make me all warm and fuzzy, but this was quite a beautiful.

We were on vacation but the boys still needed to do some school work here we have them sketching and checking the field guide.

We did a lot more hiking. As you can see Cody was worse for the wear. He was not as energetic about hiking as the rest of us.

I really like this shot it shows all of us and the canyon.

The Ravens we mad crazy when they couldn't get into the drink cooler they broke into it . The day before they just knocked off the lid and didn't like anything so on this day they decided just to open it up. The one thing the boys will remember forever is, "Those Crazy Ravens"

This was the evening we sat and watched the sun set. I know this looks a little risky pose but don't worry, there is more cliffs ledges behind them.

Justin and Buck hiked down into the canyon early one morning. They hiked to the one and a half rest stop and then came back up. So in all they did 3 miles. They had a good time.

Walnut Canyon

Walnut Canyon was a stop on our way from Pinetop to the Grand Canyon.

Cave dwellers, this was just amazing why people would live on cliffs it looked a like a very hard life.

So this was only a one mile hike but it was quire climb up and down I think the Ranger said like 285 stairs and then up and down the trails too. I am sure it was no where near what the people who lived here before,

Rock Hounding

Well we wanted to find our own Petrified wood, but no one would point us in the right direction. Buck and craig did lots of research and found a place for us.

But we were happy.

Apperently our research book was out dated and we could no longer go on the land so we improvised. We did not break the law we searched the outlying area not behind the signs.

We were all pretty into it.

I am glad we stayed out late because we saw the most amazing moon rise ever.

The Petrified Forest

While on Vacation you must do lots of stuff. This was a pretty exciting place.

We Just happen to go to the petrified Forest on National Fossil Day. We were able to go on a 1 mile hike that is not a normal area you would get to go in but because it was Fossil day we got a guided tour.

Cathy was in Rock heaven. We kept her in control and did not have to pay the $325.00 fine for taking anything from the National Park.

while we were looking at petroglyphs we notice our awesome shadows. so lets see from sect to right I think it is Craig, Cathy, Lisa , Cody ,Myself, Buck and Justin

Then we moved North to the painted Desert. You can see why.

Trip To Arizona

So Craig and Cathy invited us to join them in Pinetop Arizona for an Awesome Vacation. On our way there we stopped for a picnic lunch along the old Historic Route 66.

Grandma loves Rocks so we went on adventure to look at rocks.

This place had all of these huge signs and ads but as we got closer it looked a little creepy. We pulled in to the driveway and decided we would pass on this little store that had razor wire and mannequins with aliens all over.

Reunion cool down July 2011

On Sunday most people left but oh no not us, our way of relaxing included staying a couple more days. But we move sites. so the move was on everyone pitched in.

Smith Reunion

o.k. I am feeling guilty finally and want to add more to the blog. so here goes the Smith Reunion was a lot of fun. We went to wallowa state park in Joseph Or.. In all I think the count came to 120 something. It was really great the weather was good not to hot not to cold. families started coming on Thursday and most stayed through Sunday

Many games were played, This was a rousing game of ROOK the all time favorite of the Smith Adults.

Here is my sister Tammy, our fearless leader. She did a great job running the show. The Torrey's were in charge but we give all credit where credit is due to Tammy. Thank you for all you did girl you are Awesome.

Camping with Friends

First off I know I don't really have many followers on here, but I do want to apologize for not keeping up with the blog all summer. We were super busy and in between camping and travel I didn't have much time to load up the pictures.

SOOOOOO, I am starting with our last activity and then I will update the old ones as time permits(hopefully pretty quickly, but no promises)

South Carlsbad State Beach Campground.

We were invited by homeschool, church friends to go camping. The plans were made al the way back in Feb. . So after a very busy travailing we got home Thursday and were home 3 short days and then off to do some beach camping.

Thats Chris, a great guy he has been Justin's hockey coach and cody's soccer coach. He gave Justin some great surf pointers.

The kids had fun in the surf all day long.

Monday night we had a potluck. It was great, Buck was able to make it up, just for dinner though.

In al there were 9 families camping. Us, the Marxs, the Romines, the Depuys, he Wachs, the Kellys, the Wilsons, the Lerums and the family who put it all together the Gonzales.

Monica took a water camera out so they were all checking out the great footage.

We were so excited.

Renee had fun but was really sad to see it end.

we were so excited, but we were not the first in line.

We were a big group. Grandpa (took the day off) Grandma, Brandi, Sheila(she took the day off) Me , Renee and Cody. I guess you could call us a little crazy.

Grandpa went all out and treated us to 3-D, Imax and all it was so awesome we forgot to eat our snacks and nobody took a potty break, and when it was over we didn't realize 2 hours had passed.

I just love coming home. I do realize now after doing a little math that I have been away from White Salmon for more years than I lived there. But it is and always will be home.

Cathy worked really hard this last spring on this wonderful water feature. I will have to hire her in a couple years to make me one at my house.

I just love the sound of running water.

After a long train ride it was time to relax.

Train Ride

I don't want to get way behind on blogging so I will put up pictures as quick as possible. There might be so many words.

So Here We Go...

The first two pictures were on the train from San Diego to L.A. it took a couple hours but was pretty painless since we din't have to deal with traffic.

My biggest concern was this transfer. L.A. Train to our Coast Starlight train. IIt was a bit confusing we had reserved seats but not assigned seats. so we had to wait in a line to get seat assignments. It was pretty quick and we had no problems and we got seat all next to each other. Do we have enough carry on? Let's see two computers, two cameras, blankets, food, and extra stuff to play with while riding the train.

It was really a nice Train station , only one screaming lady trying to get help by standing in the middle of the Station repeatedly yelling where do I find the station manager.

Train #2 the seats were actually very roomy. I didn't have anyone next to me so e had plenty of room for us and our stuff.

It was a long ride but we didn't have to stop for gas and worry about finding a hotel and all that stuff. Yes I would do it again but only for a long vacation.

Moving to the Strand

Not to long ago we decided we would move back into Military housing to save some money and time. We love Tierrasanta but it was just costing to much we were paying the same as we would get if we lived in housing but then we were paying for utilities and with gas so much it was costing quite a bit for Buck to commute.

So we decided to put on the housing list with the thought of 7-9 moth wait time but we were called in about 5 weeks so the move was on.

Let's just say we have a lot of crap. The move was hard and cleaning such a big house was quite a chore.

Renee' was here to help, I am sure she wishes she was not.

Thank goodness Aunt Brandi was here . She saved the day. Brandi has lots of muscles and we made her really use them all.

But now we are all moved in so what better way celebrate than to have an big barbecue with friends

STAR SCOUT

Justin had a really great past six months in scouts.

He sold scout fair tickets to raise money for camp. he also earned a water bottle and two movie tickets for his efforts. He earned 5 merit badges : First Aid, Communication, Railroading, Engineering and Hiking. The hiking merit badge took a good 9 months. They did a pre hike of 5 miles and then four 10 mile hikes and a 20 mile Hike.

He aslo is the knot champion of the Troop. He is the Minute man, this means he can tie 5 knots in less than a minute. This competition was with the whole troop and not even something he had practiced.

He also earned his STAR rank. Justin is moving along quickly he loves scout. Notice the boys next to him are much older. He often gets mistaken for one of the older boys when mature scouts are needed or when there is an activity that only oder boys are invited to. His dad and I are so proud of him. Cody looks up to him too. When he joins net year he wants to join his big brothers patrol.

So after STAR is LIFE and then EAGLE. He should put on life shortly after Scout camp this sumer.

Sorry So Late JUSTIN"S BIRTHDAY

Well I guess I am a little late but I can't forget such a special day.

A really awesome gift from grandma and grandpa Wharton.

I guess he really liked what ever he just opened, looks like he is doing a fancy dance.

and that is big sis Renee in the background it was nice to have her here.

What good brothers.

Justin insisted on lighting he own Candles.

And now he is 13 such a big number, a teenager. I don't know if we are ready for another teenager around here but there is no stopping the moving forward of time. I just want to say I love this boy. Justin has always been in his own world, stubborn and energetic and is now growing into these attributes beautifully. He does not care what others think. Just tonight when dropping him off for a hike with the boy scouts he says oh mom hug (gives me a hug) and then says love ya in front of anyone and everyone with no second thoughts. He works so hard on things and does not give up he is really working hard on math. He is a great leader in scouts and a great example for all people. I get such high remarks about him all of the time about how he is so kind and caring and helpful and respectful. His energy never fails, up bright and early every day ready to to see what the world has for him.

I love this boy.

I know the lord has great things in store for him. This world will not know what hit them. I am so proud of the man he is becoming.

A fun weekend

First things first, Renee is here to visit us for a couple weeks. We are so excited to have here here.

We went up to Caleb and Lacee's house for memorial day weekend. Sunday after noon we went to the park to play.

We played some pool.

It was so nice at the park. Caleb said it had been in the 90's during the day but not on this day it was very cool we went to the park about 2:00 or so and it was cold we actually put on sweatshirts. It was nice to just sit and visit.

The kids had a blast swings,

we played horse shoes, lacee and I had never played before but hey, so this shot as my hand was up in the air Caleb yells boo and I let the shoe fly and it went wild. It was so funny. but then the next shot I actually got a ringer.

Oh Sunday Morning Buck and Justin went on a 10 mile hike one more 10 miler and he will have his hiking merit badge.

Justin recently participated in another scouts Eagle ceremony. I asked some random scout to take our picture It's not the best of me but I have asked that I be in more pictures, as it seems I am never anywhere in the fun because I am the one taking the pictures.

Justin did the reading for First Class.

For Justins communication merit badge he is working on he needs to plan and do a evening meeting . So he was in charge of the ceremony for the evening while camping this last weekend and the did a flag retirement ceremony also.

Practice and teaching younger scouts some knots.

Justin is such a good leader and helper. Recently he ran for troop guide. This position basically is him mentoring younger scouts and that is just so him. He takes he repressibility very serious.

Tent set up. He is a professional at this all by himself. He does it quite a lot. He traded his dad tents this is a one man. He is very particular and doesn't like sharing a tent and this is the only way to get away with out sharing.... Have a one man tent. He just has a hard tome when people are not organized and invade his personal space. He has grown so much this is a small hurdle and not one worth fighting over. Dad Still attend camps with him and sets his tent up close by not because he thinks he needs dad he is not scared in any way, But While camping Justin has a tendency of waking in alarm of not knowing where he is and you just have to say "Justin we are camping . you are in your tent" and then he is fine. Dad has also caught him once trying to escape out the back of the tent walking and talking in his sleep.

Scouts is so awesome. I am so glad Buck is a strong believer in it and that he is with them and in the leadership for them to see.

A Fun Sleep over

It is nice for Cody to be able to have a buddy over. Justin was away camping with dad and the scouts and so Cody had a sleep over. Cody's Buddy Blake came over on Sat. Afternoon. Cody and Blake have known each other for a couple years from church, plays and some school classes. Blake is in the 6th and Cody is in the 4th, oddly enough his other best buddy is in the 6th grade. Cody has stayed over at Blake's house once too. He had tons of legos as Cody does also but cody also Beyblades. In this picture they are taping up a beyblade arena because the don't like the edges, and of course you must use duct tape.

so they played, legos and beyblades and built awesome Hero scape landscapes.

If you can't tell they are having a blast just look at the room and you can't miss it.

I am so happy for the friendships the boys are growing. It is not the easiest thing to do in a military family, with moving here and there at all different times in your life. Though we have lived in San Diego most of their lives right in the middle we went to Hawaii for 4 years and then even living here we have moved around San Diego many times.

IN MY LIFE THIS WEEK:

Not to much happening this week, the school week went well.

IN OUR HOMESCHOOL THIS WEEK:

We have begun to read My Side of The Mountain by Jean Craighead George. It is a classic course and we are enjoying it. It is a simple story but so intriguing to young boys, running away, living in the wild, talking with animals, and so much more. Once again I just love reading with the boys. We started doing some research on the Catskills of New York. We looked up some videos of Falcons and listened to bird calls. We decided it was very beautiful over there and want to visit one day.

PLACES WE ARE GOING/ PEOPLE WE ARE SEEING:

Justin was invited to go to Disneyland by some classmates on Thursday. He had a great time it was nice to have him go with friends from school, guy friends, this doesn't happen a lot for Justin he has a lot of acquaintances, but not close friends so this was really exciting for him. Of course he had a blast.
Justin and Buck went on a Boy scout camp on Friday and Saturday night.

Cody had a buddy over for a sleep over.

MY FAVORITE THING THIS WEEK:

I guess my favorite thing this was getting some reading time in. I was able to have a nice time Friday night just sitting and reading while Buck and Justin were away and Cody played video games.

WHAT'S WORKING/NOT WORKING

Something really working is Justin being tutored by Mrs. Vickie in math he seems to really be grasping these new concepts.

HOMESCHOOL QUESTIONS AND THOUGHTS

With the thought of moving in the next couple months trying to consolidate the amount of days we would be coming across the bridge. I am thinking of changing schools. The boys could go 2 days but everything there is project based. but then I think Justin would only have one year there and then what for high school. For some reason society has told him that he must do high school just like everyone else. I have been exploring other options for him but have not come up with a plan exactly but these things will just run around in my head for awhile and I will make some kind of decision at some point.

My Handsome Sailor

Buck at the Change of Command Last Thursday.

I was so excited when Buck sent this to me.

We don't always get good pictures when he is all dressed up.

This is the first time he has worn this uniform ( I almost called it an outfit)

It took hours of work the night before to get it ready and an extra $50 to get the medals to mount on it. I guess it was worth all that work Because he looks Awesome

I know I tell this to my husband all the time, but I might not say it publicly, I am so proud of him for his years in the service and his unwavering love for this country and his ability to serve the people of it. He works hard and rarely complains of the long and strange hours, the amount of travel and all of the stress. He never questions where they need him and he is in the Navy to do what they need and where.

I am so glad he loves what he does. Who knew that age 18 he would make this career choice. An Air Crewman in a helicopter not to mention his favorite part Rescue Swimmer. Most husbands go to work in an office but mine chooses to jump out of perfectly working helicopter. For years Buck was able to choose other programs that would change his career from enlisted to Officer, but he did not want that. Yes we would eventually make way more money, but he would not get to do what he is doing now. He would not have a choice of air or boat, so instead we stay with what WE love.

Over the last couple of years while working regular hours and traveling all the same, Buck has finished his associates, and Bachelors Degree and just this month he has started work on his Masters.

I am so proud of him.

In My Life This Week:

Well, I guess I can't call this weekly if I don't do it weekly but I am trying. This week has been great. I am enjoying every bit of it. Buck got home on Sunday from a week long trip to pick up another Helicopter. The weather has been very nice and even a little Hot, so sunday I took Cody and Kyle to the beach and it was very nice to sit back and relax.

In our Homeschool This Week:

We have had a great Homeschool week. We have been really working on our U.S geography and have started our second grouping the Midwestern states the boys are doing really good but I am mastering them I tested myself today and only missed one state, not to bad. . We finished up Fable Haven #5 The Keys To the demon Prison.

Places we are going people we are seeing:

We attended a school expo Justin shared some of his artwork. we hit the movies on base and the beach. tonight Justin went to the all student worship night.

My favorite thing this week was:

Our life group meeting on Wednesday. we are doing a book called Love and Respect and I feel like I am learning so much about my husband in the process.

What's working/not working:

I think that most things are working right now. Justin has found a great math tutor in Nina's Mom. This helps me as sometime your kid just thinks he knows more than you and to have someone else teach them just works better.

Homeschool Questions/ thoughts to share:

I guess here is where I say how much I love homeschool and I sure do. I am just so thankful for the opportunity to be homeschool my kids and spend this short amount of time I have with them in their life. I love it and could never see doing this a different way.

Then we did something we have never don on Easter, we headed to the beach. We had checked the tide schedule and it was going to be low at about 10:00. It was just perfect not hot and not cold. This was a great idea. With dad here it was the perfect trip. I know how much he loves the beach and he was able to share this with the California grandkids.

We found so many awesome things, star fish, sea hare, sea cucumbers, clams, lots of hermit crabs and we saw dolphins swimming too.

These two had so much fun. Quite the adventurers

After a detour to the bathroom Lacee, Caleb and Andreja joined us.

This was a lot of fun.

Don't forget the Easter dinner. Yes this is the fancy set. The dishes were actually purchased in China. now I guess I need some more fancy serving stuff.

I think they enjoyed the food and company.

Dad had gone to the store to get some milk and found these cute little cakes. What a great grandpa.

We attended our normal time church on Sunday evening and it was wonderful.

When I first heard dad was going to be making an epic trip down to California to visit Caleb and then down to my house I was a little apprehensive. I have always got along with him but never spent lots of time with him.

I have to say this was the most awesome visit ever. we had so much fun. and we as a family learned so much about Joseph Torrey. We really got to know each other better as we did a personal history questioner. The boys had fun asking the questions for awhile, but then moved onto other things, but I was intrigued. I wanted more and more. I learned so many things that I did not know about my dad, and how he grew up.

We visited some fun San diego Historical sites. I really think we share this interest I love to learn about history and I am not so concerned about exact dates and he agrees he loves the story

We talked a lot about his time that was spent in the Marine Corpse, so I had to snap this picture to tease him about using our Navy blanket.

He is so caring he ran to the store on Easter to get us some milk and this is what he brought back. a surprise treat for us.

As long as I can remember I knew my dad loved the ocean. so while he was here we went a couple times. We spent Easter at the tide pools. I have to say this is probably the best way we have ever celebrated our saviors resurrection. He died on the cross for us and we thank him so much for that. I loved that my dad was so understanding in our choice to no longer be members of the Mormon church. I felt his support in the way that we live our lives and the choices we have made spiritually.

Dad if you read this or don not, I want you to know how much I love you and how much this visit meant to me. Thank you for taking the time to get to know our family. It has been hard all of these years living far away. I sometimes feel I do not get to spend the time I wish I could with you because of our distance, but then again this kind of visiting doesn't happen when you spend day to day time together and you don't open up and share like you do on a short visit.

Dad I loved learning about your childhood and all that you shared with me. I can't wait to continue learning more on the phone or when we come up this summer to visit.

Justin's Fitness Test

Well I know my son is physically fit, but apparently the state must have their proof. Justin had to do push ups, sit ups , arm stretch, trunk lift and a 1 mile run.

of course he did great and well over the minimums of all tasks.

Had to use his inhaler at the end and was super out of breath but he made it in 8 minutes 39 seconds. Pretty darn good.

Brooklyn was very concerned that Justin needed his inhaler and lots of water. She had fun watching the whole event.

In My Life This week.

well of course another busy week. Buck started his first class towards his Masters Degree. We just keep moving on lets see.

Mon: School

Tues: Library,fitness test, Boy scouts Watch Brooklyn

Wed: Class at school, Drama,

Thur: Speech, guitar, watch Brooklyn

Fri: church bulletin stuffing, Occupational therapy, watch Brendan and Ronnie, Park, stuffing eggs for easter out reach. Justin to scout fair campout and Ice cream shop.

Sat: Scout fair, cleaning Cosy's room, laundry, and lots more.

In Our Homeschool This Week:

School went well this week. The boys and I did a lot of reading and lots of game playing.

We are now in the middle of the Last book of Fable haven may days we read 2 to 4 chapters. Justin is really working on his book he is writing with a lot of sketches and scene settings. Cody and I started a new book called Lucy Wipple it has lots about moving west to California. So far it pretty good.

Places We Are Going/ People We Are Seeing.

we were mostly home this week. But watched Broklyn on Tuesday and Thursday and then another friends kids on Friday. Made a little money but was kept busy. Justin had his fitness test that was lots of fun. he did really good Never thought he was an unfit kid but you know the state must know exactly how fit I guess.

What is Working or Not Working.

This week felt pretty good in our house and School. I would say my husbands schedule is not working but hey I can't control that. Something really working is all of the fun game we have been playing.

Homeschool questions/ Thought to Share

I have been talking with new Charter school parents and trying to explain the in and outs. I have to say I have loved the charter schools in Ca. The ease of being able to homeschool with the benefit of being able to purchase curriculum, attend field trips, go to some classes and the great resource of special education. And even as I say this I think how nice it would be to not have it either. I will just have to see how this all works out.

Our New Favorite Game

I have heard from many people that this game, The Settlers of Catan is so much fun but being about $40.00 or more we hadn't yet purchased it. Well I get funds from our charter school and I used them to buy this game. Oh my goodness we love it.

It's time to move the robber

We played it the first night Buck got back from Fallon and then on Saturday they played two rounds with Nina. The game is for up to 4 players but we will buy the expansion soon so we can play with 6 players.

They had a blast and Cody is the big winner so far.

as you can see Cody is the master. We were home today because Cody has been sick and I won those young boys. I had to let them know they could not win there mommy.

I see a whole lot of game playing going on in this house in the future.

In My life this week....

This week was just a little crazy, Buck left on Sunday to be gone for the whole week. Cody left on Sunday to go camping with his best buddy Kyle until Wed.. Justin was with Nina's family for the day. so I had the afternoon all to my self, I finished the fifth book in series I was reading and of course did some cleaning. the beginning of the week went smoothly Justin still home with me and doing some school. But when Cody got home he things made a change, the or thing was just so tired. He took a nap in the car while Justin was at he drama class. I looked at the poor fellow and said your neck is swollen and you just don't look good. I called the Dr. but of course it was like 4:30 in the afternoon so I would have to call back in the morning. So I did and got him in for a 3:45 apt by this time his temp was up in the morning and down around noon but when we got to the Dr.'s it was 103. They gave him motrin and took a look into is throat and yes we think it might be strep. They took a culture (at this time on Sunday of course I haven't heard the results of that) and sadly he got a shot on his poor behind. He doesn't get sick often so when he does he goes all out. He also must have a high tolerance for pain and love for having fun because id I didn't drag him to the Dr he wouldn't go. At this point he is so bored of watching t.v.

(I guess this can be a good thing)

In our homeschool this week.....

Well truthfully not a lot happened on the school front with Cody camping and getting sick. Justin plugged along in his math and enjoyed he new drama class, they are doing a rendition of Harry Potter. He is Ron.

Places were going and people were seeing.....

Buck went to Fallon, Nevada from Sunday to Thursday.

Cody went camping from sunday to Wednesday and of course to the Dr.

Justin had class and went to Nina's on Sunday and Thursday

I drove to the airport twice, took Justin to class, and picked cody up went the Dr with him went to a life group rally on Friday night with Buck.

Sat we were supposed to go to a family picnic but decided best if Cody stayed home so Justin stayed with him and Buck and I went.

I called Caleb and Dad had made it there so we thought we would head up to twenty-nine palms on Sunday. but when Buck and I got up from the picnic cody had a temp of 101 so we decided to stay home.

My favorite thing this week....

We went to a house for a picnic on Sat. and it was just awesome. It made me remember why we wanted to live on Silver Strand so many years ago. Housing wait list are moving much faster theses days and we decided to put on the waitlist for housing. Buck could ride his bike to work almost everyday, and we wouldn't have to pay $300 or more in utilities like we are now. Yes it will be so much smaller but we will have the beach on one side of the house and the bay on the other what could be better than that.

What is working/not working....

seems all is going well. I continue to rethink how we do school and want to adjust more to using less structured workbook and textbooks

Homeschool questions /thought to share....

Do the boys really need the resource classes at the school as much as we thought. Next year, What if I don't use a charter and maybe we can travel with Buck more? Things to think about I guess.

A new little visitor

oh to have a little one in the house again. I am helping out our youth pastor and wife by doing a little childcare. She is just so cute she loved the Rats. What she really liked was that she could share some of the rat snack. (dried pineapple and banana chips)

While I was reading to the boys we locked the dogs out. Hunter was not happy he is laying down on the other side of the gate.

Boy did she love the dogs especially Hunter. (she actually has a yellow lab at her grandparents house named Hunter . How crazy is that?) she would walk up to Hunter turn his face to her and say "KISS"

If there ever was a dog who deserves an ward for being patient he should earn it. She thought he looked like a nice comfortable chair.

I forgot this is what a room looks like after a 17 month old has been at your house all morning.

In the afternoon, after nap she played nicely all by herself putting her baby in the blanket and feeding them a bottle it was just great.

I really enjoyed the day. No I will not start back to full time child care but a couple times a week for the next couple weeks will work out just fine.

In my life this week...

I had lots of fun with my family.

In our homeschool this week...

We have read lots of Our Book, Fablehaven. It was due at the library and we had not finished so we spent quite a bit of time finishing up. We couldn't renew it. There was a hold on it so instead we hunkered down and finished we might owe a couple bucks to the library but hey, thats life. I have enjoyed reading this serious to the boys. I have always read non fiction books and then lots of historical fiction. I have a found a new love for the fantasy genre. We are on book 4 of a 5 book series and they just can's get enough I usually read 2 chapters most mornings but they beg for more every time. I really enjoy this time with them we talk about the word choices used by the author, the plot, make predications and look up what the monsters look like in the Dungeons and Dragons Monster Manual. I have to say I never thought this would be the kind of books I would enjoy but I have found a new love.

Places we're going and people we're seeing...

I went to a women's retreat and while I was there Buck took the boys to a book signing and a boat show. The rest of the week was pretty regular.

My favorite thing this week was...

Having a baby in the house, there is just something about them.

What's working/not working for us...

our schedule seems to be working well not too busy. But I suppose it will pick back up. I will just have to be very picky about what we add back into it.

Spring Women's Retreat

Well this is the road I had to drive up to get to the retreat. It brought back memories of my only car accident.

The first speaker of the weekend was Lisa. I love to hear her speak she is just wonderful. When Renee lived here she watched Lisa's boys. She also spoke on Romans 12;2 this is renee's life scripture. "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is ---his good, pleasing and perfect will.

This made me think about Renee a lot that day.

This is Connie. A very good friend and our E.F. (educational facilitator) from school. It was neat to spend some time with her. We love her very much and it is so nice that our teacher also goes to our church.

This is my bunk. It kinda looks like a cabin on a cruise ship. I had two kinda tuff sleepless nights, but thats another story.

This swing looked so inviting to spend a couple hours on, to do some reading. But it was tooooo cold. I brought the sleeping bag out to wrap up in and made it about 30 mins before giving up. It is really hard to turn the pages in the book when you are wearing gloves.

I had a very wonderful spirit filled weekend. I was able to spend some time alone with myself and know how much God loves me.

Art and a little conversation

a couple weeks ago Josh and Kyle stayed over. We started doing some art and just went with it and we had a rally good Sat. night.

They sketched for awhile and Josh showed us music on you tube that he liked.

Then we decided to try some chalks.

It took com convincing to get Justin and Josh to participate in this. Over the many years I have learned that Justin And Josh are not into messy things. But with a little coaxing we talked them into it. Notice Josh holding the chalk with two fingers.

Riley's Farm Civil War

Justin was able to join Nina on a field trip with her Charter School. They went to a Civil War camp for the day. I did not go so this is all pictures they took and stories he told when he got home. I think the picture above is the town meeting.

They had some shooting practice and then the battle. He came home with a view on the war that was very interesting.

We talked about that for a bit. I told him that most wars were like that. and they were usually over land or money. We have not done a lot of American History. I am looking forward to the study next year.

Old Town San Diego

As you all know when you are in the fourth grade it is the year of your state history, Because of course that is the only time you can learn about your state( hope you hear my sarcasm) anyway. We love to learn about our state what ever our age. That all said, Cody and I did some California history last Wed. We headed to Old Town San Diego.

It was a perfect cool afternoon. We didn't stay too long and will have to make a return trip maybe a couple.

This is the first San Diego Jail. I think personally it looks like a small person oven. but hey if more jails looked like this maybe there wouldn't be so much crime.

I wanted proof that I was there so we did a timer picture. It was lots of fun hanging out with Cody.

I told Cody maybe that wasn't the best position to look at the cannon.

We went on a 1 hour guided tour. Old Town is a CA state park. I was impressed with this beautiful kitchen. All of the cooking was done outside.

This was the courtyard of one of the wealthiest homes at the time, it was beautiful.

we learned a lot. Did you know???? that when Old Town was getting old they put in New Town in what now is down town. The man who started down there tried to get people to move there but they liked their Old Town. Soooo he made a huge effort by stating that the San Diego River would eventually close it self down by all of the silt that it pulled down. so it was in every one best interest to move the San Diego Rives natural flow. He paid to have it moved and took the water source right out from under the Old Town area. And guess what everyone had to move to the New Town area if they wanted water.

wow the things you learn.

We only saw about 10% of what is in the Park so we will have to go back, But hey it is free so we can go as many times as we want.

Some Scout Activities

To say we are involved in Scouts is an understatement. Buck is a Assistant Boy Scout Master, and an Assistant cub Scout Master and the Co-WeBeLos leader. I am the WeBeLos leader and attend all things required of me like committee meetings, parent meetings and the such.

so here a couple things we have done lately

Buck took Justin and Kendin on a 20 mile hike. They missed the troop hike so had to make it up for their Hiking Merit badge.

The Hiking Merit badge requires five 10 mile hikes and a 20 mile hike. It was quite the adventure we left the house at 5:45 A.M I got to go to just for the driving part. I dropped them off at the mexico border and then they hiked 20 miles and met Cody and I at Lake Morena.

We had fun reading and playing and picnicking.

TheCub Scout BLue and Gold Dinner and awards. I thought Buck ditched me but I guess he was taking pictures

The next morning Buck and Justin went to Idlewild (thats where we camp when Buck does the 24 hour bike ride) This was the Klondike Derby the had all kinds of competitions. This was the fire starting one Justin rocked at it. the troop also one best spirit and a couple other things.

They actually had snow fall all day on sat. so it was a great success.

but very, very cold. luckily they did have cabins, not that they were super heated but at least some heat.

The New Toys

so there are so many reasons I love my husband.. One of them is he loves to play. He works hard so he deserves to play hard.

He loves,

Mountain biking

surfing

snowboarding

hiking

camping

swimming

jumping out of helicopters

snorkeling

running

he would add more if we could only afford them.

To this collection we now add kayaking.

When a co-worker said he needed to get rid of them because they were just sitting around in storage costing him a fortune and now he was moving and just didn't want to move them, he made Buck an offer he could not refuse. So on Saturday Buck, Justin and Cody went to pick them up.

Sunday, Cody and Buck took them out for a float. One is shorter ad one longer (i don't know the length) The red one that Buck is in has two compartments and we could take out with a picnic or something.

So the above picture is Cody getting some out of water instruction. It was a little cool out so neither one of them actually wanted to get wet.

While the kids were in Florida

well we took this nice Feb. weekend to go up to Caleb and Lacee's house up in 29 palms. and because it is still winter and perfect hiking weather, we planned a couple hikes.

on our morning hike we took Caleb, Lacee, and the girls. it was lots of fun.

We saw this awesome set up I think this will be the direction Buck will want to go.

Drej was getting tired Uncle Buck had made her walk enough so when he took a rest on a rock she scurried right up his back for a nice cruise.

It was just so cute, I keep telling Buck we need one of these but he says oh no we don't.

so that morning we did about 3 miles. That was not enough for us. Buck and I headed out for a little longer hike it is about 5 miles. This was before we started.

it didn't quite go as planned.

so from the beginning we were on the wrong trail we followed a loop but not the right one this one had a whole bunch of elevation up and down at least 3 times. needless to say I was about to kill Buck, but we made it of course we had plenty of water and snacks and time.

we had a great hike and had time to have great uninterrupted conversations. We had great time together. I love my husband so much and I love that he loves the outdoors. As a family we appreciate all he does for us.

when We got back to the truck we saw where we went wrong just a simple sign miss reading.

we had lots of fun.

THE TRIP TO FLORIDA

Oh the excitement was building the boys were getting so excited. They were going to Florida and going to see their sister(they sure do miss her) and they get to see Grandma and Grandpa Wharton.

I walked it across the little creek. This was at the beginning. I figure if I had wet feet the rest of the ride would really suck. On the way back I did ride through it.

We lov this free adventure. We go every winter and it is neat to see all of the hawks. I love spending time with my family doing things together. Buck was there but he was the photographer this time

grandparents visit

Just after we got back from our vacation to WA. Grandma and Grandpa Wharton came down here to San Diego for a business conference.

On This day I went up to 29 palms to pick up the doggies and Buck played Tour guide.

at lunch they had this Huge PIZZA. They finished it, and it only took 7 adults and 2 kids.

They headed to the Midway museum. They said it was pretty cool.

We have made the trip to WA. so many time and never stopped at the capitol. so this year we made the choice to stop and check it out.

This is the rotunda. I have to say the building was so beautiful, there was such wonderful furniture and intricate wood work.

Salem trip and visit

We headed down the gorge to Salem to visit Grandma and Grandpa Wright. But me made a potty break at Multnomah Falls. It is just so beautiful.

You would never believe this if I didn't have pictures but at that very same time my mom,dad, Uncle David and Aunt Bonnie stopped too. They were heading to Portland to take Aunt Bonnie to Eddies house. It was pretty crazy. so I was able to get some good pictures of mom and Aunt Bonnie. I was able to spend some time with Aunt Bonnie this trip as she was visiting too and I have to say we are the same in a lot of ways.

Notice Aunt Bonnies house slippers she wasn't really planning on getting out but we made her so we could get pictures.

We made it to Salem ad had a blast. Grandpa loves to share his coins and stamps with the boys especially Justin. I must say I sat in on the conversation and found his stories intriguing about the coins.

My day with Rylan

The day the boys went snowboarding I was going to to go over to Tammy's, but when we woke up to snow I thought well I will just stay at the Wharton's and get packing. I had told Rylan I would come see here school, I didn't think she really cared. When I called Tammy she said that Rylan was expecting me and had already asked before se went to school if I was coming. I could not shatter the poor girls dream of having Aunt April come to here school. So I talked my mother in law into bringing me over to Hood River. I m so glad. Rylan was so excited. Here she is across the room realizing Aunt April came.

While mommy talked to her teacher Rylan showed me her inside playground (for most of us that is strange but hey it's the northwest). It was really cool she was just so cute and animated showing me everything.

we had a couple errands to run and she was such a big girl helper. I was very happy to spend the day with Tammy and her girls(we picked up the other two later but we just went to the Dr n0 fun pictures) I love you guys.

Snowboard trip

o.k. I have tried to do this post like 5 time. finally the pictures decided they would go on. so this is one of the main reasons for going to the Northwest for winter. they boys wanted to snowboard on real snow and they really got to.

This is where Buck did most of his learning to snowboard. he really enjoyed taking the boys this year. They have grown up so much and they really enjoy doing fun things with their dad.

Justin is in the tan jacket and Cody in the dark blue. Both of them are getting really good at snowboarding. Cody doesn't have quite the stamina so he takes a mid day break at the cafeteria. Te rest of the time he is ready to go.

Buck, Justin and Cody were able to go to Mt. Hood Meadows 2 times. The had 10 inches of powder on the second trip. They really enjoyed the powder as they had never been on that kind of run before so it was lots of fun.

return trip from Pasco

So we saw so many Eagles on the way to Pasco we made it our mission to find a eagle and get a picture.

We stopped at Dougs beach on the Washington side of the river and were very hopeful. Buck has a very good eye and was able to spot one pretty quick.

He took a picture and said there was one and then we realized there were two up at the top of that tree.

Then one took off and we were able to catch in flight.

It was just so beautiful. very cold but a great day.

Since we were out and about we decided to see if we could find some geocaches. we were in luck the first was just a short hike.

This was a really cool tree. it looks like some kind of animal in Narnia.

Then we found another geocache right in the parking area where we had parked.

Visit to mom and dad in Pasco

I just want to give fair warning. Lots of pictures alert. I want to get all the vacation pictures done but I don't want to rush to much.

so the picture above is Justin in a "Phone box" he was quite excited to see it. so excited that he had to have his picture in it. It has something to do with the DR Who show he has been watching. we had a great drive to Pasco. We saw around 12 Bald Eagles but we were driving and they were on the wrong side of the freeway, we saw the wild rams on the hill but once again going to fast for any good pictures. but just because we didn't get pictures doesn't mean we didn't enjoy seeing them.

Upon getting into Pasco, we met up at Uncle Lewis and Aunt Mary's house. We visited a little and then they took us to a Chinese restaurant.

We had a great time visiting and eating as always. Thank you Uncle Lewis and Aunt Mary that was really nice of you guys to treat us.

What a great mama and girl. I have to say I had a blast getting to know this little girl. She has such a wonderful spirit, she is strong willed and has everyone wrapped around there little finger. I know she is going to be a great big sister. Kelsey is expecting and is due Just before the family reunion in July.

Well Zayden was weilding the knife about, so Buck showed him what he could use a knife on so they are busy smashing garlic for guacamole. My family loves when Buck comes to town because he loves to cook and they love to eat, it is a great combination.

We love to play games apparently this was Aunt Bonnie's least favorite game. So After she lost 3 times it was time for a new game.

This picture is in moms Guest room and it is so beautiful, quite some time ago when Uncle Mike had been renting out his home. someone rented it and painted this picture for grandma Smith. It was the view from his house to grandmas house. I have to say I just love it. I took a good picture of it so maybe Justin could recreate one for me.

Three Trees

My mom loves Christmas. There are decorations everywhere, in every space even the soap dispensers in the bathroom are updated at Christmas. She loves it so much she has Three trees. I have't been home for Christmas for many years, and this year we didn't either but we went up just after Christmas so we were able to see all the beautiful Christmas decorations.

I loved it so much.

The Great Christmas Gift

well for Christmas this year we got a great gift, Craig and Cathy paid for new bamboo flooring for our White Salmon house. so the day after New years we set out on putting in new flooring. what a fun adventure.

First we had to rip up the carpet, yes you heard me WE , I actually helped. I helped roll up and carry out the carpet and then pull the staples. But most of all I am good at sweeping and vacuuming so I did lot of that. Then I was done that was the end of my expertise. so the rest was left up to Buck and his dad and Brandi helped when she could.

I was so excited I was going to host the New Years Eve Party. We bought lots of food and had set up tables for games, but then I got a migraine. I ended up in bed from like 4:30 to like 9:00 and then still felt pretty crappy. I was so upset I really wanted to have a good time all my friends said it was because I planned it and next time just wing it and all will go smoothly. All in all we still had a good time I just din't get a lot of great pictures.

Levi Graduated Boot Camp

Well I didn't make it to Chicago, But today is the day that Levi Graduated Boot camp. It is the stat of a new time in life.

I love this picture of my little pumpkins I am so proud of them.

Renee and Levi were great to have around this Summer we had lots of fun.

Most of all I am so happy that Renee was able to be reunited with her husband today. Bitter sweet as it will only be for a short time as he continues his Navy career with his schools.

but for today I am thinking happy thoughts for the two of them.

Cody was so excited to be in White Salmon he wanted to be out side we had not unpacked anything yet so he borrowed what ever he could and headed outside.

He found a big, big bunny. He has been around Grandma and Grandpas house for quite a few years. It is defiantly a house pet that got away but it has made it quite some time on it's own.

Did I mention it was probably like 20 degrees out there, he didn't care he was so ready to get out in nature.

Vacation in Washington

The boys went on a treasure hunt around Grandma and Grandpas house to find the best Christmas present . Tickets to Harry Potter town. the are really excited they might go to the Kennedy space center and maybe see some alligators.

Buck and the boys made Grandma a bird feeder. I think she liked it.

Justin got some new snow pants and goggles from Aunt Brandi.

So did Cody, and he is just so cool.

First up lots of traffic in L.A. what a mess took over 4 hours to get through

One of the few sunny times on the trip. I would say out of 20 hours of driving over 15 was in snow or rain. What a drive just can't wait for the return trip.

O.k lots more pictures, after opening the stuff from Santa and the presents under the tree we ate some breakfast packed and headed up to Caleb and Lacee's house in 29 palms. we had a good drive and did't hit any traffic.

Of course as soon as e arrived the kids just had to exchange gifts.

The girls were pretty excited too.

Caleb got a pool table recently and it was a big hit.

Justin was talked into a game of Candyland.

Here is a now not so classic everyone on some kind of machine. but they were having fun.

Lacee, Renee and I started a very difficult 500 piece puzzle, but after finishing the edges we kinda gave up and then Lacee tried an easier one, Just joking she was helping the kids.

Christmas

They are all ready to go down to see what Santa might have dropped off.

We got some awesome headphone the boys each got a pair and I got some for the home computer.

Buck got me a Pandora bracelet, I had been looking at them and all the cool beads. I love it.

Renee got Cody a pillow pet and on our way up to Caleb and Lacee's house I turned around in the car and saw this, it was so cute not a posed picture.

We had a wonderful beginning of Christmas and later I will blog about the rest of our day up at 29 palms.

Day Five of Christmas Break (Christmas Eve)

finally we got to go outside for some fun. we picked up some extra kids and headed out..... only one problem the rest of Southern Ca. also thought it would be a good idea. so we had to wait about 45 min in traffic and and parking and then some of a line to get in but thats o.k. we were ready for some fun.

The first ride of the day something like a tea cups. these guys were not going to spin but then they decided to go all out. This is Geni in front and Justin in the back and Nina, Justin's friend.

Buck took the others and and they planned on really get spinning. Josh in the back with kyle next to him and Cody next to his dad.

Here is Josh and Justin totally upside down. There is a number system 1-5 1 being the easiest and 5 the crazy one.. this is Justin and Josh on #3. Cody and Kyle picked #5 and Buck and Geni picked #2. they all had fun no matter what number they picked

Day Four of Christmas Break

No rain, but no where to go. this is the golf course view from the house and at the far side is the San Diego River. Yesterday the river was actually in the golf course.

Buck, Justin and Cody had some presents to work on in the wood shop.

Justin got to use the nail gun.

Getting ready for dinner. cody is pretending to talk on the phone. Buck went out shopping and the boys hung around. We only read one chapter in our book today.

Time to settle down. We are going to snuggle up and watch a movie. Night at The Museum 2.

Day Three of Christmas Break

So day 3 of vacation and still it rains. when I came down this morning Buck had found another leak and pulled out this paper holder. Just past that basket is where my Laptop sits with speakers. I am very blessed that it did not start dripping yet. and Buck was able to move it.

When Buck got up early for work he started the fire and so it was nice and toasty in my room so Justin came up and joined me for awhile. Justin and I then headed out to the Dr. (Cody was at Kyle's house)

After the Dr. I drove Justin up to Mira Mesa to his FRIEND Nina's house. So with Justin dropped of at Ninas and Cody at Kyles and Renee at work I was all by myself, sooo

I went to toys r us store, didn't find anything, stopped at the pet store found some col rat stuff. next over to Barnse and Noble to window shop. Looked at all kinds of cool games, took pictures of them so I could research and find them cheaper somewhere else, Like amazon, there was a Auron brothers right next door so I found some art stuff for the boys, and then I walked into Bath and Body works and walked right back out the amount of smells in that store just make me sick.

This is way more shopping then I ever do but it was kinda nice to just stroll on no ones schedule, just me no kids nagging to go to the next thing or to buy me that. so to top it off I treated myself to lunch at La Salsa. It was quite yummy and I made some lists of things to do before leaving for Washington. It was a little weird eating by yourself.

Cody is home and tired of course form his sleep over and is now all cuddled up. Justin should be home soon and I think Renee is shopping with a friend. Buck is tired from his long day at work and is lounging on the couch watching Engineering the Impossible that we had on the DVR.

it started to clear up a bit maybe tomorrow we can do something outside. Buck does not have togo to work so we will have a good family day.

Day Two of Christmas break

great start to the day some cold cereal. I did make them hot cocoa I don't totally fail as a mom.

Gloomy, gloomy with lots of rain today we hit 6 days in a row with one more in store.

but sometimes we don't mind some rain, it gives a big excuse to read, we started book # 2 in Fable Haven series: The Society of the Evening Star. we read about 5 chapters witch is quite a bit, usually when we sit down we have enough time for 1 to 2 chapters. So this was a treat. we did head out after this to the library.

I put out lots of bird seed feeling sorry for birds in all this rain, It kept Soda entertained for quite some time.

Renee was working on some last minute Christmas presents and recruited Justin for some help. he had fun and it was good to see them doing something together. These days are growing short. We will miss Renee when she moves.

Took Cody to Kyle's for a sleepover. Buck, Justin and I hit Costco for the Christmas Ham.

All in all a good day.

First day of Christmas break

well our first day of vacation we are stuck inside with the crazy rainy weather we are just not use to this amount of rainfall over this many days.

so Justin is playing a little X-BOX

Kyle stayed the night so he joined us on our adventures. The boys caught him up on FABLEHAVEN, the book we are reading. and then he got to listen to the last 4 chapters. While listening he was able to play with the maxnetics set.

He also joined us this morning as we stuffed the bulletins at church he was very good at it and so we finished in record time by 9:30, normally we are there until at least 10:00.

Hunter was really enjoying the lazy reading time.

We love the house that we rent, it is in the perfect location the size is wonderful, but it leaks witch of course for the majority of the year is no big problem but this is what we woke up to this morning, lots of leaking. we know where it leaks but it is not a easy fix. So we just deal with it. I guess a small price to pay for the house we live in.

You can see the big wet spot well Buck has patched that up before but each time it rains it starts again and then up farther you can see the big bubble just waiting for release. in previous times we have tried to fix it we now have it only in this one section so we helped a little by Buck putting up some flashing on the roof.

Luckily the table catches most of it so it is not getting the carpet but the buckets ad bowls are quite full now. As you can see outside is quite gloomy.

HSL45 Christmas Party

Here is a great leader this young man said that Buck is his Idol chief. Well it makes me feel good that the ones who work for him like him and respect him and the Christmas party is where I get to find out these kind of things.

I have to say going to these things is not always my most exciting thing to do. But it is good. Buck and I were able to have a night out. anyway I had to go shopping this year (a thing I greatly despise) I liked this blouse but the boys, who had to shop with me said it was for an old lady, anyway I liked it and I thought it looked very festive. And the truth is I am getting older so I guess I can where an old lady shirt.
